People of the lab
Sur Herrera Paredes, PhD
Principal Investigator
Sur obtained his B.Sc. in Genomic Sciences from the National Autonomous
University of Mexico (UNAM) in 2009. In 2017 he obtained his PhD from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying the plant
microbiome under the co-supervision of Prof. Jefferey L. Dangl and Prof.
Corbin D. Jones. Afterwards, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford
University studyíng microbial evolution under the supervision of Prof.
Hunter B. Fraser. He started his research group at LIIGH in 2023 where
he uses a combination of dry and wet lab approaches to understand how
different ecological interactions shape the evolutionary process, and
how those ecological interactions evolve.
Carina Uribe Díaz, MSc
Academic Technician
Carina graduated from the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) as
a Chemical Food Engineer. For her undergraduate thesis, she conducted research at the Biotechnology Laboratory of UAQ. In 2022 she obtained her master's
degree in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. At LIIGH she has
served as an Academic Technician since 2015 to support the development
and innovation of genomics and molecular biology techniques.
Manuel Rivera Cerón
Undergraduate Student
Manuel is a student of the Undergraduate
Program on Genomics, at the UNAM ENES Juriquilla. His main interests are
microbiomes, viruses, immunology and machine learning. Currently he
studies population variability using the Lotka-volterra equations, and
he is motivated by the application of neural networks to infer their
properties.
Natalia Said Muñoz, BSc
Master's student
I am Natalia, a Biotech Engineer with minor in Molecular Biology. I am really interested in developing in areas such as bioinformatics, molecular biology and bioremediation.
I have had experience in bioremediation and plant tissue culture laboratories, working as research assistant at the Advanced Institute of Water Industry in Kyungpook University in South Korea and at the Research Center for Applied Science and Advanced Technology in Querátaro. Furthermore, I have worked in projects related to heavy metals and textile-dye water pollution.
I am fluent in three languages: spanish, english and german. I am curious, hard-working and always willing to learn and improve. I admire all the possible applications biotechnology can have and I am very thrilled on embarking in this mission to create a more sustainable World.

Andrea Zermeño Díaz
Undergraduate student
Andrea is a second year undergraduate student in the Genomic Science program at ENES Juriquilla, UNAM. Her main interests are studying evolution trough molecular mechanisms in bacteria and modeling interactions between different species. She will be working with biosynthetic gene clusters.
Yara Zúñiga Aragón
Undergraduate student
My name is Yara. I am currently a 7th semester student of Pharmacobiotechnological Chemistry, at UVM, Juriquilla Campus. I am interested mainly in Microbiology and Pharmacognosy. I consider myself to be a person who is good at working in a team, I am always eager to learn new things and I like to have an open mind towards all perspectives. I have a dog.
Ernesto Gutiérrez Piñón
Undergraduate student
I am Ernesto Gutiérrez Piñón, a student of the Bachelor's Degree in Genomic Sciences at ENES Juriquilla. I am constantly seeking new knowledge, with a particular interest in scientific research. I am passionate about learning and discovering how organisms interact with their environment. I aim not only to contribute to the advancement of knowledge but also to create a positive impact through science..
Mónica Reyes Ramírez
Undergraduate student
My name is Mónica Reyes Ramírez, and I am currently in my second semester of the Genomic Sciences program at UNAM. I am 19 years old and originally from Chiapas, but three years ago, I moved to Mexico City to attend high school. It was there that I became curious about what a gene is and how it relates to the world around us, which led me to choose this field of study. I consider myself passionate about nature and animal life, with a particular interest in marine life. Some of my hobbies include reading, listening to music, and traveling to explore different places, discover various forms of animal and plant life, and learn more about everything that surrounds us.
Alejandro Pinto Sánchez
Undergraduate student
I’m a 2nd semester undergraduate student of genomic sciences at UNAM Campus Juriquilla. My main interests are genetic diseases and also how diseases are spread and what we can do to prevent them. As side projects I do translation and graphic design. I will be working with Physarum polycephalum.
Abigail Montante Arenas
Undergraduate student
I'm Abi, currently finishing the Bachelor's in Microbiology from UAQ. I'm interested in studying metabolic models at the genomic level, and I'm also interested in parasites and forensic science. I practice archery and swimming, and my favorite book is "Love, Theoretically" by Ali Hazelwood.
Yetel Ramírez Mosqueda, BSc
Master's student
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition graduate from the Autonomous University of Querétaro and currently a master’s student in Human Nutrition Sciences at the same university. Passionate about research, innovation, and teaching. I am currently collaborating with LIIGH on a project focused on gut microbiota in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.
Mayra Beatriz Mendoza Velázquez
Intern
My name is Mayra Mendoza. I am finishing my undergraduate degree in Microbiology at the Autonomous University of Querétaro. I am passionate about understanding how climate change transforms microbial communities and how mathematical modeling can help us anticipate and explain dynamic changes. I am also interested in evolutionary ecology and the ways in which species respond to their environment.
I enjoy learning new things, collaborate , and working in projects that contribute to the advance of science.
