People of the lab
Sur Herrera Paredes, PhD
Principal Investigator
Sur obtained his B.Sc. in Genomic Sciences from the National Autonomous
University of Mexico (UNAM) in 2009. In 2017 he obtained his PhD from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying the plant
microbiome under the co-supervision of Prof. Jefferey L. Dangl and Prof.
Corbin D. Jones. Afterwards, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford
University studyíng microbial evolution under the supervision of Prof.
Hunter B. Fraser. He started his research group at LIIGH in 2023 where
he uses a combination of dry and wet lab approaches to understand how
different ecological interactions shape the evolutionary process, and
how those ecological interactions evolve.
Carina Uribe Díaz, MSc
Academic Technician
Carina graduated from the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) as
a Chemical Food Engineer. For her undergraduate thesis, she conducted research at the Biotechnology Laboratory of UAQ. In 2022 she obtained her master's
degree in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. At LIIGH she has
served as an Academic Technician since 2015 to support the development
and innovation of genomics and molecular biology techniques.
Manuel Rivera Cerón
Undergraduate Student
Manuel is a student of the Undergraduate
Program on Genomics, at the UNAM ENES Juriquilla. His main interests are
microbiomes, viruses, immunology and machine learning. Currently he
studies population variability using the Lotka-volterra equations, and
he is motivated by the application of neural networks to infer their
properties.
Marcos Ernesto Ramírez Ramírez
Undergraduate Student
Marcos is a student of the Agrogenomic Sciences program at the UNAM ENES León. He is interested in understanding how the environment affects DNA evolution. His aim is to understand complex life patterns through Systems Biology.
Natalia Said Muñoz, BSc
Masters student
I am Natalia, a Biotech Engineer with minor in Molecular Biology. I am really interested in developing in areas such as bioinformatics, molecular biology and bioremediation.
I have had experience in bioremediation and plant tissue culture laboratories, working as research assistant at the Advanced Institute of Water Industry in Kyungpook University in South Korea and at the Research Center for Applied Science and Advanced Technology in Querátaro. Furthermore, I have worked in projects related to heavy metals and textile-dye water pollution.
I am fluent in three languages: spanish, english and german. I am curious, hard-working and always willing to learn and improve. I admire all the possible applications biotechnology can have and I am very thrilled on embarking in this mission to create a more sustainable World.

Evelyn Lozano Ramos
Undergraduate student
Evelyn is an undergraduate student at Arkansas State University Queretaro enrolled in
Biotechnology with a minor in Chemistry. Eager to learn more of the resulting
interactions between bacterial colonies and plants.

Andrea Zermeño Díaz
Undergraduate student
Andrea is a second year undergraduate student in the Genomic Science program at ENES Juriquilla, UNAM. Her main interests are studying evolution trough molecular mechanisms in bacteria and modeling interactions between different species. She will be working with biosynthetic gene clusters.
Rodrigo Aguilar Díaz
Undergraduate student
I am Rodrigo, a sixth semester student of the genomic sciences degree at ENES Juriquilla, campus UNAM. I am curious about many things from insect communities to gene regulatory networks, that's why one of the main topics I'm interested in is systems biology. But I also like to play videogames, and I have a dog.
Ana Lilia López Gallo, BSc
Internship
I am a Biotechnology Engineering student at ITESM. During my studies, I specialized in Functional Genomics and Synthetic Biology. I am interested in continuing to learn about gene editing techniques, microbiomes, and plants.
Yara Zúñiga Aragón
Undergraduate student
My name is Yara. I am currently a 7th semester student of Pharmacobiotechnological Chemistry, at UVM, Juriquilla Campus. I am interested mainly in Microbiology and Pharmacognosy. I consider myself to be a person who is good at working in a team, I am always eager to learn new things and I like to have an open mind towards all perspectives. I have a dog.
Mariana Salgado Huerta
Undergraduate student
My name is Mariana. I am currently a sixth semester student in biotechnology engineering at ITESM. I’m curious about human biology and the interconnected systems that shape who we are. I’m particularly fascinated by the brain, memory functions, the human microbiota, and chronic diseases. I am eager to contribute to advancements in these areas. Driven by a desire for continuous personal and professional growth in an international and culturally enriching environment.
